The wines of Ribera del Duero – Part 2

15th May 2010

Our favourite 5 wines from the region (all red).

2009 Lopez Cristobal, Joven (young wine) Ribera del Duero, 95% Tempranillo, 5% Merlot

A great example of a young Ribera wine, this aromatic beauty has lovely soft strawberry fruit and chocolate on the palate. For those who don’t like too much oak in their wines, this is drinking well now but will improve over 2-3 years.

2007 Vizcarra, Crianza (aged in oak for at least one year) Ribera del Duero, 100% Tempranillo

Our favourite Crianza. The wine had a deep red colour with strong aromas of strawberry, vanilla and spice. The oak definitely does not overwhelm the fruit. Nice structure, drinking well now but will improve. Lovely soft fruit and mineral notes the palate. Long, dry finish.

2006 Pago de Capellanes 2006, Crianza, Ribera del Duero, 85% Tempranillo, 10% Cabernet-Sauvignon, 10% Merlot

One of the few Ribera wines not 100% Tempranillo based, and it shows. The first thing that hit us was the aroma; complex with notes of black fruits, spice and tobacco. The Cabernet and Merlot add a richness and structure to the palate, again black fruits, chocolate and vanilla dominate. The tannins are particularly fine. Another long finish.

2005 Linaje Garsea, Reserva (minimum age of 3 years before release) Ribera del Duero, 100% Tempranillo

The finest Ribera Reserva we came across at the tasting. An amazing nose of vanilla, coconut and intense black fruits, it almost overwhelms the senses. Great length across the palate with a multitude of flavours on the tongue, this wine will live for at least another 20 years. A powerful wine! Very long, complex finish.

2001 Valduero, Reserva, Ribera del Duero, 100% Tempranillo

The most elegant, understated wine we tasted, less power but more finesse. Lingering aromas of coffee, tobacco and spice on the nose, this wine is medium bodied with soft fruits and oak on the palate. Perfect for drinking now, it has reached its peak. Try it with Roast Lamb.  (http://www.mumblesfinewines.co.uk stock Valduero)
